Nashville- Attorney General Herbert H. Slatery III has secured an agreement to urge nearly $15 million in loan forgiveness on 2,068 loans for former ITT Tech students in Tennessee. The agreement may be a component of a settlement with 43 attorneys general and thus the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Nationally, the settlement will end in debt relief of about $330 million on about 43,000 loans.
The settlement is with PEAKS Trust, a private loan program pass by itt tech lawsuit update and affiliated with Deutsche Bank entities. ITT filed bankruptcy in 2016 amid investigations by state attorneys general and following action by the U.S. Department of Education to limit ITT’s access to federal student aid. ITT had 149 locations around the country, including Tennessee.
PEAKS was formed when private lending sources available to for-profit colleges dried up after the 2008 financial crisis. ITT Tech developed a thought with PEAKS to provide students temporary credit to cover the gap in tuition between federal student aid and thus the complete cost of their education. The credit became due nine months later, but many students complained that they thought it wouldn’t be due until six months after they graduated, almost like federal loans, according to the settlement.
“ITT knew that tons of scholars ultimately placed into ITT Private Loans were likely to default,” the CFPB said.
The CFPB specifically cites itt tech lawsuit cash receipts reported in 2011, which showed 89% of its tuition came from federal loans, with 7% coming in from private loans, leaving a 45 shortfall.
